Grisedale Pike

Grisedale Pike at 791 metres is the pointed peak you see from Keswick when you look south-west. It is a proper mountain — clearly defined, with a summit that looks like a summit should, and approaches that feel committing. The north-east ridge from Braithwaite is one of the finer ridge walks in the north-western fells, with genuine exposure and views across the Derwent valley. The summit is narrow and rocky with a clear cairn at the top. The view north takes in Skiddaw and Blencathra. South-west, the Coledale Horseshoe spreads out — Hopegill Head, Eel Crag (Crag Hill), Sail, and Causey Pike form a circuit that is one of the great walks in the north-western fells. East, Derwentwater and Bassenthwaite Lake are both visible. Grisedale Pike is directly connected to the Coledale Horseshoe, making it the natural start or end of that circuit. The ridge between Grisedale Pike and Hopegill Head is exposed and rewarding.

Walking

The Braithwaite approach (CA12 5TW) takes the north-east ridge directly to the summit. The path leaves the village, climbs through forestry, and emerges onto open fell above the treeline. The upper ridge is the best part — a fine, airy line with good views throughout. Around 6 miles return with 900 metres of ascent. Allow 4 to 5 hours. The Coledale Horseshoe is the main reason to visit this group. From Braithwaite, the circuit takes in Grisedale Pike, Hopegill Head, Eel Crag, Sail, Scar Crags, and Causey Pike before descending back to the village. Around 10 miles with 1,100 metres of ascent. Allow 6 to 7 hours. This is genuinely one of the best circuit walks in the north-western fells. A shorter version of the Coledale round omits Hopegill Head and returns from Eel Crag via Coledale Hause. This knocks around 90 minutes off the day.

Tips

The Coledale Horseshoe is the reason to visit this group and should be done rather than just Grisedale Pike. The Royal Oak at Braithwaite (CA12 5SY) is a reliable walkers' pub with good food. Parking is in the village — arrive early as the lay-bys fill on popular days.
